Various federal police officers in a car on patrol STORYLINE: Authorities in northern Mexico have arrested five and say they are searching for another seven suspects linked to an arson attack on a casino that killed 52 people. Nuevo Leon state Governor Rodrigo Medina says at least 12 people were involved in the attack in the city of Monterrey. Medina made the comments Tuesday as officials brought out five alleged members of the Zetas drug cartel who have since been detained in connection with the casino fire. Medina said police have collected enough evidence to suggest the five "appear to be the actual authors and participants of this attack". The men arrested are aged between 18 and 37 years old. It is understood that last Thursday a group of gunmen entered and set fire to the Casino Royale causing terrified customers and employees inside to run for cover. Many were later found dead from smoke inhalation in offices and bathrooms having been unable to exit the building. Police are investigating whether the attack was in retaliation for not paying extortion money. The attack marked a macabre milestone in a conflict that the government says has claimed more than 35,000 lives since President Felipe Calderon launched an offensive against drug cartels in late 2006. Others put the overall death toll near 40,000. Federal police have deployed 1,500 officers and sent Black Hawk helicopters in to step up security in Monterrey. The Mexican army has said it was sending in 1,500 soldiers. Calderon has offered a 2.4 (m) million US dollar reward for information leading to the capture of the casino''s attackers, an amount comparable to rewards offered for the arrest of the country''s top drug lords.
